Aether

In this month’s Aether update, we are focusing on SDN Substrate (aka TOST - Trellis/ONOS/Stratum/Tofino)

  • Introduced an initial version of TOST control plane high-availability for links, switches and ONOS instances.
  • Testing framework improved to provide enhanced test coverage of all TOST components.
  • Work commenced on developing TOST APIs to allow external applications to get network information, set specific paths for different traffic types and set ACLs to drop packets.
  • Operationalized P4-based dual core 4G/5G user plane function in the production network.
  • Support for Inband Network Telemetry (INT) enhanced with containerized Deep Insight 4.0 integration.
  • Automated deployment, monitoring, logging integrated with Aether’s CI/CD toolchain.

Ambassador Program

  • We are excited to welcome our latest Ambassadors in the Asia region:
    • Trinh Minh Tri - an Access Network Researcher in the Research and Development Center, Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group. Dr. Tri started working with open networking in 2011 when he implemented Nox SDN Controller and Flowvisor to create network virtualization test-bed for his PhD work. Dr. Tri continues researching on open networking areas and he has led the VNPT research projects collaborating with NTT Labs team to build a CORD test-bed and implement the new technologies such as: spp, dpdk and zero-touch multi-service provisioning to make CORD more feasible for Operator’s requirements.
    • Franciscus Xaverius Ari Wibowo - IT strategy expert in Telkom Indonesia. He has more than 20 years of experience in telecommunication network, starting from intelligent network, CDMA, and NGN-based architecture. As an IT strategy expert, he is responsible for defining the Future State Architecture of Telkom Indonesia Network and IT and deeply involved in the Cloudification journey towards SDN/NFV implementation within Telkom Indonesia.
  • ONF Ambassador program held its first-ever event  in Tunisia. Read about it here.

COMAC+OMEC

  •  We created a 5G cluster environment, one cluster is on Google, the second one is based in ONF’s Menlo Park office.
  • We deployed 5G control plane helm charts to GCP, and data plane helm charts to Menlo Park cluster.
  • Currently, our 5G core passed the registration procedure from UE of ng40.

Developer Relations

OIMT

  • A 4-day OIMT virtual face-to-face meeting took place on November 30 and December 2-4.
  • The TR-512.8 Control model was discussed to provide guidance to ITU-T Q14/15 for its draft G.7719 work, including the use of the Exposure Context and Constrain Domain object classes. Agreed that update and enhancement to the model are in need.
  • Discussion occurred with an operator and a system vendor to provide guidance on the use of the TR-512 Core model and the modeling tools.
  • Explored model representation of multi-source multi-destination bidirectional (optical) media channel.

ONOS/µONOS

  • Continued discussing the TR-512.8 v1.4 Control model to provide guidance to ITU-T Q14/15 for its draft G.7719 work, including modeling of the Administrative/Client/Server Contexts in the SDN controller interaction.
  • Continued exploring model representation of multi-source/-destination bidirectional (optical) media channels. Restrictions/rules of signal merge/split are being described.
  • Discussion occurred on issues with the TR-512.6 v1.4 Physical Equipment model aiming for updating the model to address the issues and to improve the model.
  • Tooling discussion continues in the IISOMI weekly calls. The code of the UML to YANG automatic translation tool (xmi2yang) is being updated, taking feedback from ITU-T SG15 Q14/15 in its Carrier Ethernet and MPLS-TP UML information model and YANG data model works.

OTCC

  • OIF has now published a white paper on the TAPI testing, it is available here: https://www.oiforum.com/oif-validates-maturity-of-transport-sdn-apis-in-2020-multi-vendor-interoperability-demonstration-results-published-in-new-white-paper/ and will also be liaised to ONF.  Thanks to Arturo Mayoral (Telefonica) and Nigel Davis (Ciena) for contributing to this.
  • The TAPI project is focusing on building TAPI 2.3, with input from Telefonica on new use cases on connectivity and OAM and alarming.  Ramon Casellas (CTTC) is taking over the editorship of TR-547 from Arturo.
  • xHaul project has been meeting weekly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays to work on models, architecture and protocols.  Results are going into github and xHaul is planning on updating TR-532v2 in 3Q2021.  Project participants are doing implementation as well as specification, including an interface validator.  Testing of controller management for 6-8000 devices is planned in 1Q and 40K devices in 3Q.  Work is now believed to cover 95% of configuration activities for microwave devices.

P4

  • Announced the 2021 P4 Workshop which will take place as a virtual event May 18-20 and there is no fee for attendees. The CFP is open now and will close April 12th.

SD-RAN

  • The ONF SD-RAN team is working with Facebook and AirHop to develop a Self Organizing Network (SON) use-case built on the micro-ONOS nRT-RIC platform. This use-case resolves Physical Cell Identifier (PCI) conflicts in 4G and 5G base stations.
  • Thanks to Cory Modlin, Ilango Purushothaman, Matthew William Edwards,Alan Wang (MPK), Omar Abdelkader and others from Facebook for their contributions. Thanks as well to Bijan Golkar and Joe Thome from AirHop.
  • Since January of this year, the SD-RAN project has been hosting SD-RAN Community Calls every two weeks for ONF members, where we deep-dive into various topics related to the project. If you are an ONF member, please subscribe to the sdran-dev mailing list to automatically get an invitation to the meeting.

SEBA/VOLTHA

  • Plan and Initial work for minor software update for both ONOS apps and VOLTHA components, including extraction of the OLT pipeline driver from ONOS into the olt app  has been done thanks to Mahir, Ilayda, Tunahan from NETSIA and Andrea Campanella ONF.
  • Started implementing a possible alternative to ETCD after ongoing design discussions at TST, thanks to Serkant Uluderya from NETSIA, David Bainridge and Khenaidoo Nursimulu  Ciena and Matteo Scandolo from ONF.
