FAQ A1

Q: Describe the Open Innovation Pipeline from the new ONF. What is it?

A: The ONF Open Innovation Pipeline provides a broadly applicable framework built on turn-key open source building blocks to deliver complete solutions for network operators. The Open Innovation Pipeline uniquely leverages both open source and software-defined standards to realize the potential of SDN and NFV, thereby reducing the friction of bringing innovation into operator networks for the benefit of operators and vendors.

ON.Lab, with CORD® and ONOS®, successfully brought together operators, vendors and integrators to build solutions for carrier networks by leveraging SDN, NFV and Cloud technologies through an open source approach to solution creation. Building on ON.Lab’s success of CORD and ONOS, the new ONF is industrializing and opening the unique process that enabled the creation of these platforms to create the Open Innovation Pipeline.

Leveraging network device disaggregation, open source platforms and software defined standards, the “end-to-end” Open Innovation Pipeline is the only one of its kind in the networking industry with the potential to have a huge impact on how SDN and NFV get deployed in networks.

Central to the approach is to leverage the ONF’s deep relationships with operators to validate the vision, a focus on high-value use cases and solutions, and solidifying pre-established paths with operator partners for taking solutions into operator PoCs (proof of concepts), trials and deployment.
