In February 2019, ONF’s ambassador Dongkyun Kim and Aris Risdianto participated in APRICOT (Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies) 2019 at Daejeon Convention Center (DCC), Daejeon, South Korea.

APRICOT 2019 provides valuable opportunities for all participants to contribute to the discussions on Internet operations, technologies and development. The event will brings together Internet engineers and networking experts, government representatives, Internet business leaders, and other interested parties from around the world during ten-day summit consisting of seminars, workshops, tutorials, conference sessions, birds-of-a-feather (BOFs), and other forums. This current event is mainly sponsored by APRICOT, APNIC (Asia Pacific Network Information Centre) and KISTI (Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information). APRICOT is a non-profit industry association whose aim is to promote the development and improvement of knowledge, skills, and collaboration within the Internet technical operations community in the Asia Pacific region. APNIC (Asia Pacific Network Information Centre) is an open, membership-based, not-for-profit service organization. It is the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for the Asia Pacific region, responsible for the management and distribution of Internet number resources (IP addresses and AS numbers). KISTI is a Korean government research institute that promotes national science and technology competitiveness by building science, technology, research and development infrastructure including national research network (KREONET) and supercomputing environment.

In this event, our ambassadors were able to deliver two different talks which are presentation of ONOS VDN over KREONET-S Infrastructure and ONOS SDN IP Tutorial. The first talk with title, “ONOS-based Location and Load aware Virtually Dedicated Container Networking over KREONET-S” was presented in Datacenter session which focuses to share the implementation of a location and load aware orchestration system that allows KREONET-S users to dynamically and rapidly manage their demanding Kubernetes-based containerized computing and storage resources coupled with high-performance virtual networks (VDNs) controlled by ONOS controller.

The second talk with title of “ONOS SDN IP : Tutorial and Use case for SDX” was presented in 90 minutes tutorial session to introduce ONF and its projects. In particular we focused on ONOS project and its SDN IP (Seamless IP and SDN) application as well as special use case for SDX (Software-defined Exchange). An ONOS SDN IP live demonstration was also provided by executing step-by-step ONOS controller deployment, SDN IP configuration and verification.

In summary, ONF and ONOS project were not famous amongst the audience: some of the people were completely new to it. During the conference, we have very good discussion with many speakers and participants from different background such as Google, Cloudflare, Line Corporation, Bloomberg, Nexusguard, Equinix, Myren, and others. Especially for Google, we were discussing about Google Espresso controller which is very similar with our concept of SDX, while Line corporation was interested in some of the ONF’s project and looking forward for future collaboration with ONF.
