Dan Pitt provides an inside look at the upcoming OpenDaylight Summit.
2015 is shaping up to be the year of collaboration within the industry. Organizations of all sizes are working together to further the advancement of SDN and open source software, and it seems like every conference I attend wants me on a panel with other organization leaders to talk about how we are collaborating to bring working, integrated solutions to the market’s attention. The industry has shifted away from developing SDN solutions in silos toward a more collaborative relationship with various industry organizations, with the goal of furthering the advancement of open SDN solutions.
This week ONF will attend the OpenDaylight Summit, taking place July 27 – 31 in Santa Clara, California, where I will appear on such a panel. At the Summit we will demonstrate our latest OpenSourceSDN.org project, Boulder, for the first time. This particular open source software project provides tools enabling the ability to write portable intent-based applications capable of leveraging different controller frameworks with the same grammar. This initial implementation leverages the OpenDaylight NIC (Network Intent Composition) project and the GBP (Group-Based Policy) component in order to showcase how intent-based applications can be written using exposed grammar and script language. This demonstration will be conducted by Benjamin Eze and Mathieu Lemay of Inocybe Technologies on Tuesday, July 28 from 5 – 5:20 p.m. PDT.
I am looking forward to participating in the keynote panel along with other leaders from industry organizations. We will discuss how to accommodate a wide range of technologies and projects while encouraging collaboration and focus around a common code base. The keynote, “Models of Collaboration,” will take place on Wednesday, July 29 from 10:40 – 11:25 a.m. PDT. Along with panel moderator and ODL executive director Neela Jacques, I will be joined by fellow panelists including Christos Kolias, senior research scientist at Orange Silicon Valley; Guru Parulkar, executive director of the Open Networking Research Center; Justin Pettit, lead developer at Open vSwitch (and longtime vice chair of the Extensibility WG in ONF); and Prodip Sen, CTO of the NFV business unit at HP and chairman of OPNFV (not to mention founding president of ETSI NFV and former ONF board member).
ONF’s Director of Product and Community Management, Bithika Khargharia, will also participate in the Summit with a demonstration of ONF’s recent open source software distribution, Atrium. Through our open source initiatives, ONF has enjoyed working with a multitude of companies to create a comprehensive software stack designed to lower the barrier to adoption of open SDN. In this demonstration, Bithika will introduce attendees to the stack and show how you too can get involved within our open source community. The demo will take place on Wednesday, July 29 from 4:30 – 4:50 p.m. PDT in the demo theater.
I am encouraged to see various organizations within the industry come together and share how they are collaborating to further the advancement of open SDN initiatives. As we continue work to drive open SDN adoption, we help move the industry toward new models of efficiency and innovation in networking and computing for the benefit of all who operate IT infrastructures. ONF strives not only to be a part of this exciting time in the SDN movement but to lead these collaboration initiatives as well.
