Foundation Expands Audience and Reach of SDN and OpenFlow® into the Sciences
Palo Alto, Calif. – September 6, 2012
WHO: The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) Executive Director Dan Pitt will present a session entitled, "Software-Defined Networking: Directly Programming the Network for Innovation in Science and Business" in the High Performance Computing program at the Bio-IT World Cloud Summit event.
In addition, members of the ONF Market Education Committee will present an Overview of OpenFlow® and SDN in a pre-conference short course.
WHEN: Pitt’s session will be presented on September 12, 2012 at 9:05 – 9:35 a.m. PDT. The OpenFlow® short course will be presented on September 10, 2012 at 2-5 p.m. PDT.
WHERE: The conference and presentations will be held at the Hotel Kabuki in San Francisco, California.
WHAT: During the conference session, Pitt will discuss how Software-Defined Networking (SDN) turns the network into the servant of the applications. Using concepts and tools consistent with the virtualization of computing, network owners, enterprises, and departments can directly incorporate specific scientific and business objectives in the instructions governing network operation. In this talk, Pitt will explain the fundamental importance of SDN, show how the OpenFlow® protocol makes it possible, and suggest ways in which ONF and the life sciences community can work together to turn promise into practice.
During the conference short course session, members of the Foundation will discuss how to fully virtualize resources from compute and storage to networking to better answer users needs, facilitate self-services and deliver new types of services where applications are aware of the network state and vice-versa. The ONF members will share deployment best practices and examples of real life scenarios of OpenFlow® and SDN.
The ONF continues to lead the industry in SDN and OpenFlow® by expanding the boundaries into new areas and participating in top industry events. With this presentation, ONF anticipates introducing SDN to the science community, as well as creating a partnership with this industry to help expand high performance computing for the life sciences and engineering.
